Back on January 10, a crash claimed the life of two young brothers, aged 1 and 8, and put their mother in the hospital in a coma. Today, police released the results of their investigation and announced that the boys had been killed by an 18-year-old driver in a pickup truck that was racing another pickup truck. One driver has been arrested while the other remains at large.

That’s the report. As for my feelings about this, as a father, I can find no words.

Who races a pickup truck in broad daylight?? Also, people still street race??? And not to blame the victim since street racing is bad, but I wonder if “turning left onto the street” in front of street racing trucks was a bad idea. Sure this is why street racing is incredibly dangerous but I wonder if that was a bit of missed defensive driving and not yielding to traffic. Tragic though either way!

If I was in charge, this kid would be given a large framed photo of the two boys and be required to display it prominently everywhere he lives. “Are those your brothers?” visitors would ask. “No, I killed them,” he would be forced to reply.

I drove through that very place today. It’s incredibly congested, and I have no idea how those two idiots had the room to race, or how they couldn’t put two neurons together and realize it was a horrible place to drive like complete assholes in giant pickups. As for the woman, who knows? Maybe she’ll wake up from her coma long enough to tell us. Perhaps she saw them and misjudged their speed. After all, who drives 70+ mph on that stretch of road?

I wonder if the other guy is going to have the courage to step forward. He knows exactly what happened. He’ll tell somebody, he’ll eventually get busted, but my money is on him being a craven coward for as long as possible.

I hate and detest these people.

They drive around thinking the rules don’t apply to them, no harm will come to them, they won’t get in/cause a collision because they are a great driver, yadda yadda.

There is no just punishment, those parents have lost two children, witnessed two lives lost that they had wanted to see grow up, marry, argue with, play with, spend christmas’s with, etc... all because two arseholes wanted to race. But if you prison them, they’ll get a few years if that and get released and bleet about how life dealt them a wrong hand, it wasn’t their fault, etc... you can’t execute them because many don’t see it as a capitol offence and why should they not live a life with it on their mind, if they ever do?

My youngest is almost one and my oldest is eight. Just makes me think there ought to be weight restrictions on underage drivers. Can’t drive anything bigger than 3000 pounds if you’re under the age of 21. Or at least 18 so we can try your ass as an adult.

Yes, people still street race. Any race vid that happens “in Mexico” is usually an illegal street race.

I’d say there are (mostly) two types of street racers:

1.) Racers of opportunity/morons playing around (people in this story).

2.) Racers who have nowhere to go/prefer the street and typically race on a deserted road at 2AM. Sometimes involves spotters and radios for safety and to keep ahead of law enforcement.

A few months ago two racers crashed and killed a dad and his daughter walking home from school. They eventually got both the drivers. The other truck bro will talk to somebody. Maybe somebody will come forward with dash cam footage. I bet they catch him.

I dont see the point in giving the kid the death penalty. People make mistakes and should be given a chance to change. Sure, prison for a bunch of years is a good start but even just having to live with that guilt is a punishment in its own regard. I have no sympathy for the asshole but perhaps he will step up and become an advocate against street racing, try to stop others from gaining the same fate.

Yeah, the right way is on a track. Especially if your thrill is simply drag racing with no safety precautions, there are plenty of strips that do dirt cheap run what you brung type of stuff.

I think this person is an absolute nitwit and if it was truly up to me, he would’ve been locked up for life!

But that’s the thing, I’m biased and I let spite get the best of me. A judge needs to be more objective and focus on the legal basis for their sentence. In this case a judge needs to look at this person and realize that we’re more complex than a single act for as hard as that may look.

That’s why I sometimes detest lawyers, they seem so cold to a situation almost unhuman. But its how the profession is, you don’t let passion ruin your objectivity

Well, I mean, city bros with trucks, yes, regulate those assholes, but what about young farmers or people that actually need to haul shit around? It really makes the whole regulatory background a bit hard to navigate

Perhaps a special license should be necessary for vehicles with solid rear axles that weigh over 4700 pounds (i.e. trucks) together with a congestion charge for driving in the city unless its proven to be a work vehicle.

This way bros are discouraged from buying and only serious people get trucks.

I don’t mean to be rude but, thats absurd IMO. That wouldn’t prevent anything, just means street racers would kill people by driving their 2700 pound civic into a passing car at 110mph, instead of a crashing a 4000 pound vehicle at 80mph.

I was just saying that there are crazy accidents like this a lot that people survive from, so whenever there’s one that people die in, it makes you wonder. On Twitter, I saw a post of a guy who ran into a dump truck in his old MDX and was completely fine; the Acura looked as crushed as this Rogue.
